MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – From new tax-saving opportunities for farmers to major infrastructure projects and a strong film industry, Middle Georgia’s business landscape is experiencing significant growth and transformation.

Agriculture tax exemption now open

Georgia farmers have a limited-time opportunity to save money on sales tax. The 2026 Georgia Agricultural Tax Exemption (GATE) program is now accepting applications. Qualified agriculture producers can apply for new certificates or renew those that expired in 2025. Once approved, certificates will remain valid through the end of 2028, providing substantial sales tax savings on agricultural purchases and equipment.

Monroe County welcomes major energy project

A new natural gas power plant is coming to Monroe County, promising to bring jobs and economic benefits to the region. Oglethorpe Power recently announced the selection of Kiewit Corporation to construct the facility. Monroe County Commissioner Eddie Rowland praised the development, stating that “Oglethorpe Power has been a valuable partner to Monroe County for decades, and their selection of Kiewit subsidiary TIC, a proven industry leader, will bring jobs and other meaningful economic benefits while strengthening the reliable energy infrastructure that supports Monroe County residents and businesses.”

Five Star Automotive changes hands

Middle Georgia’s automotive landscape is shifting with the sale of Five Star Automotive to ALM Automotive Group. The transaction includes Genesis of Macon, Five Star Mazda, Five Star Hyundai Warner Robins, Five Star Hyundai Macon, and Five Star Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram Macon.

ALM Automotive Group CEO Khush Bhatia called the acquisition part of the company’s diversification strategy to expand its franchised dealership portfolio. “We are excited to welcome these dealerships and their dedicated staff into the ALM family,” Bhatia said. The deal closed on December 15, 2025.

Georgia’s film industry sets another record

Georgia continues to cement its status as a major entertainment production hub. According to the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, 2025 was another record-breaking year for the state’s film industry, hosting 412 film productions.

Several Georgia-filmed projects are releasing this month on major streaming platforms. Netflix’s “His & Hers” premiered on January 8, while Amazon Prime Video will release “It’s Not Like That” on January 25. Netflix follows up with “Free Bert” on January 26th.

National popcorn day approaching 

In celebration of National Popcorn Day on January 19, Golden Ticket Cinemas which operates a location in Dublin is offering Gold Star Rewards members 50% off regular and large popcorn, plus $1 refills on the 2026 annual popcorn bucket for that day only.

Fitness centers expand across the region

Three major grand openings scheduled this month.  One Life Fitness is celebrating its grand opening in Macon on January 14, bringing a 50,000-square-foot facility with state-of-the-art equipment to Tom Hill Sr. Boulevard. In Houston County, Regymen Fitness opened in Bonaire on January 9, and Colossal Fitness will hold its grand opening in Byron on January 20.

Perry Startup Summit offers free business resources

Aspiring and current entrepreneurs can access valuable resources at the upcoming Perry Startup Summit. The City of Perry is hosting the free, two-day conference on February 19-20 at the Perry Events Center on Macon Road.

The summit will bring together experienced business leaders, local experts, and resource partners to provide practical guidance on starting, funding, and growing successful businesses in Perry and throughout Georgia. The event is open to entrepreneurs at all stages, from those with initial ideas to established small business owners seeking growth strategies.
