Mercer Women’s Soccer Hosts Stetson in First Round of A-Sun Championship

MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – The fourth-seeded Mercer women’s soccer team hosts its first-ever Atlantic Sun Championship match in program history when it welcomes fifth-seeded Stetson into town on November 2 for a 7 p.m. kick-off at Bear Field.

Mercer (9-7-3) has reached the title game of the A-Sun Championship in each of the last three seasons and has a 5-5-6 all-time record in A-Sun Championship play.

Mercer is 1-0 all-time in A-Sun Championship play against Stetson, blanking the Hatters 5-0 in the semifinals of the 2010 A-Sun Championship.

The Bears defeated the Hatters 2-1 in their only meeting this season back on October 20 in Macon. Mercer used second half goals from senior Sadie Curry and freshman Kim Murphy to secure the win.

Scouting the Opposition

Stetson (6-9-2) is making its first A-Sun Championship appearance since 2010 under first-year head coach Manoj Khettry. The Hatters finished the regular season on a three-match losing streak, culminating with a 4-0 loss to Florida Gulf Coast last time out on October 26. Stetson is led by A-Sun All-Conference first team selection Amber Grose who has eight points on the season and ranks tied for third in the league with six assists.

Game Notes

– Senior Casey Barrett appeared in her 80th career game in Mercer’s regular season finale at Jacksonville. Barrett is now tied for 15th for the most games played in a career in A-Sun Conference history and already holds the record for the most games played by a Mercer player in program history. Barrett’s 13 career assists is also tied for the 10th-most in a career in program history.

– If Mercer can win its A-Sun Championship first round match-up against Stetson on Saturday it will set a new program record with 23 wins over a two-year span, breaking the old mark of 22 victories achieved during the 2007-08 campaigns.
