Mercer University Women’s Choir prepares for “Celebration of Song” Thanksgiving concert

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The sounds of six part harmony filled the halls of Mercer University’s Townsend School of Music, Tuesday.

The school’s Womens’ Choir is preparing for their upcoming Thanksgiving concert. “A Celebration of Song” will be held Nov. 23, at 3 p.m., at Mercer’s Finckling Hall.

The choir is under the direction of Stanley Roberts. Roberts has been Mercer University’s Choral Director for 18 years.

“Those who sing in the choir depend upon everyone else,” says Roberts.

The choir develops their core sound rehearsing in small groups, according to Roberts.

“They are trained to listen to their own voice and how it, interacts with the other voices in their section, as well as how their section interacts with other sections in the choir,” he says.

The singers give a variety of reasons for participating in the choir.

Jackie Atchison admits practicing two to three times a week is very therapeutic for her.

“I get this feeling inside it’s kind of like this warm bubbly feeling cause I always feel at home when I’m singing in the choir,” says Atchison.

Taylor Bischoff says being a part of the choir has helped her to believe in herself.

“I never was super confident in my musical abilities so being able to join a college choir was just the greatest thing for me,” says Bischoff.

She has a special piece of music, the choir will be performing during the Thanksgiving concert, she says is her favorite, “Thank you Lord.”

“It kind of reminds me of the things that I have to be thankful for.”

Anisha Massey says singing classical music is more challenging for her vocally.

“It offers a different quality and a different melody and a different kind of depth to it than pop music,” explains Massey.
