Mercer University creates “Mercer Innovation Center” to support small businesses

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Mercer University wants to help make the state the “Silicon Valley” of the south.

Leaders announced plans for a new innovation center to help boost entrepreneurship and create 21st century jobs in Middle Georgia.

Students and the public with business ideas will be able to use the space to create products and services that will help increase economic development and jobs in the region.

“I think it’s important that we begin building a 21st century economy in this region of the state. I think we’re well positioned to do it. I think we’ve got the assets to do and I think as Atlanta is growing into a real high tech center, it’s important for us to experience a big part of that growth ourselves,” Mercer University President Bill Underwood said.

A news release says “the center will be based in a modern , re-purposed, 10,000 square foot facility strategically located to Mercer’s School of Engineering, School of Medicine and Willet Science Center. “

The university is partnering with the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority, which is providing up to $75,000 annually for three years to help underwrite the salary for the Center’s director and furnishing five additional co-working spaces in facilities it owns in downtown Macon.

The center is offering three levels of membership to the public, with a 10% discount to veterans and active military members:

$25 per month — community membership that includes admission to a monthly entrepreneurship speaker series and workshops by Stetson School of Business and economics faculty.

$100 per month — the community plus membership plus that also includes workspace in the center, access to other university facilities and student interns.

$500 per month — community pro membership that also includes a furnished locked office in the Mercer Innovation Center; access to university facilities.
