Mercer University collecting donations for victims of Hurricanes Irma and Harvey
MACON, Georgia (41NBC News) – Students whose families were affected by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey started a fundraiser at the beginning of September for the communities affected by these hurricanes.
Craig McMahan, University Minister and Dean of Chapel, said students are meeting on Friday to discuss how they can help make long lasting differences in those communities.
“There’s a real connection with people who are in the affected areas with some of our students and some just because they are Mercerians, and they care about the world, and they really want to make a long lasting difference,” McMahan said.
He said the university raised $3,000 at the last home football game. The money was given to the Salvation army to help feed people.
McMahan says the company is feeding 1,000 people a day.
The toiletries collected were also given to the Salvation army to help with their shelters’ need.
If you would like to make a donation you can send a check to the University Minister’s Office or drop off items in the Connell Student Center.
