Mercer School of Engineering Gets 3-D Printer, $400,000 Grant for Biomedical Research
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Mercer University professor is hoping to make medical history
with a big chunk of change and a 3D printer.
The School of Engineering received the machine as a gift from the YKK USA Inc. It prints 3-D models that are used for advancements in the biomedical field like drug testing, and medical inserts.
“They inject a plastic, then cure it, solidify using UV light, and then build up the 3-D model,” says Dr. Sinjae Hyun.
Dr. Hyun is an associate professor of biomedical engineering at Mercer University. He plans to combine the by-products of the printer, with a $400,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.
