Mercer Medical School Grads Seek Future Destination in an Envelope

Upcoming graduates of Mercer University’s School of Medicine gathered at the Cox Capital Theatre Thursday for an annual ceremony called “Match Day.”

Medical school seniors anxiously waited to find out where they’ll spend the next few years as residents.

“I’m going to the University of Alabama,” said Annie Harris.

For Harris, the University of Alabama was her top pick, but she didn’t think she’d make the cut.

“I didn’t think I’d get in there so I didn’t rank them number 1. I ranked number 1 a place that I thought would more than likely take me, but I really prayed about it and thought about it and I got the pick I really wanted.”

Before “Match Day”, the upcoming graduates are unsure where they will begin serving residencies.  On Thursday, 63 senior medical students from Mercer’s School of Medicine, both the Macon and Savannah campuses, received envelopes with their future destinations inside.

“You’ve chosen the people you’re going to be training with that are going to be molding you and shaping you as a doctor so this is a big decision for us,” said Nathan Beasley.

Many of the students were able to let out a sigh of relief today and say the weight has been lifted off their shoulders. It’s an accomplishment that makes you feel like a million dollars.

“This is everything I’ve ever dreamed. It’s like all the hard work and every second of my life that I put into going into medical school and getting here, my dream has finally come true,” said Harris.
