Mercer Football Consistency Is Key

MACON, Georgia – (41NBC/WMGT) – The Mercer Bears are coming off a 63-10 win last Thursday night over Presbyterian.

During Tuesday afternoon’s weekly press conference, head coach Mike Jacobs spoke about the success the team had on all sides of the ball Thursday.

“I felt like it was a three-phase victory where we did some really good things in all facets of the game, so I’m appreciative of their effort and a good start to this week,” Coach Jacobs said Tuesday.

Jacobs also mentioned Tattnall Square alum Brayden Smith for his performance both on offense and on special teams, after the sophomore won Special Teams Player of the Week in the Southern Conference, as well as nationally under Stats Perform.

“The things that we see flash in practice, the country kind of got to see, and that’s that we have a guy who can really run and he can break a play, kind of create one of those impact moments at any point,” Jacobs said.  “You see him do it, not only in the special teams game with the tremendous punt return, but in the receiving room, just speaks to what we hope we can bring the rest of the season.”

Smith was in attendance Tuesday afternoon to speak about what earning these awards means to him.

“It was amazing,” he said. “My whole family was in the crowd. It felt great winning the national special teams player, but it did feel better to beat Presbyterian, and go out there and show that just because we have a lot of new faces, and we may have lost some players from last year, we’re still competing for the SoCon championship and trying to make a run at the national.”

The Bears visit Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at 3 p.m.
