Mercer University students help disabled children at Go Baby Go Event

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Pink and red Maseratis filled the University Center at Mercer.

Saturday was the annual Go Baby Go event.

Children with disabilities were given customized cars to help them with their physical therapy needs and also to allow them to have fun.

Mercer engineering and physical therapy students worked together to put smiles on kids’ faces.

One parent, Lacy Ussery, said the car is exactly what her son needed.

“You know we’ve had issues in the past where the ride on vehicles that we have are just recreation, but with this it will give him an opportunity to be able to, you know, put in that physical therapy,” Ussery said.

Mercer Department of Physical Therapy Associate Professor, Alyssa Fiss, said this event really helps children and their parents.

“These cars can be quite expensive and when you talk about the modifications, they can be really expensive,” Fiss said. “So this provides kids really with a fun way to work on strengthening, to work on mobility in something that’s much more typical to what all their typical playmates are doing.”

The children were given the cars for free.

Lockheed Martin funded the event.
