Mercer Football Sells Out First Game

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Middle Georgia is amped up and ready to go for the 2013 Mercer Bears college football season.

As construction crews work to put the last touches on the field, Mercer is getting ready for opening day.

It’ll be their first in 70 years.

Head Coach Bobby Lamb says the countdown to kickoff is coming more quickly than expected.

“There’s just a buzz around the city of Macon,” Lamb said. “You want to build a foundation and you want to get people excited about your brand of football.”

And they will be.

Individual ticket sales for the Bear’s first game sold out in 27 minutes.

“I’m not sure where we are going to seat everybody, I mean it’s everyday I get a phone call about these tickets or those tickets. I’m just trying to worry about playing the game and winning the game,” Lamb said.

Mercer Athletic Director Jim Cole says the quick sales prove middle Georgia is ready to see another team on the gridiron.

“It’s our job to really put a product, not only on the field, but in the concessions and parking that people say wow I want to come back more,” Cole said.

If ticket sales show hoe excited the community is about the upcoming first game, the Bear’s will have plenty of support this season.
