Mentors Project Hosts Financial Literacy Class

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – For one Macon man, having a new addition to the family reminds him to be responsible with his money.

For him, a simple financial literacy class is about more than just the cash.

Brandon Brown likes to brag on his kids, like any family man would.

“I do I do I have a six year old and I have one on the way, going to be here in April,” said Brown.

And like a man who places family first, he knows he needs to be responsible.

“I look at the man as the head of the household and if I’m the head of the household I’m the one that’s going out and winning the bread and you know, getting the money, I need to know to handle that and manage that.”

That’s why nights like Thursday night are so important.

The Mentor’s Project of Bibb County and State Bank were just a couple of sponsors who presented a financial literacy class to the community at the Buck Melton Community Center in Macon.

“We want people to make informed decisions about what to do with their money,” said June O’Neal.

June O’Neal, with the Mentor’s Project, helped host the event.

“When people are able to make sound financial decisions, they can make their money work for them, and that’s what we’re hoping they’ll learn to do this evening,” said O’Neal.

And for fathers like Brandon, it was a great opportunity to learn a few financial lessons.

“You know as a kid you kind of spend money on what you want to, and as an adult you have to spend money on what you have to,” said Brown. “I feel if we budget our finances better, it’ll be an A plus for the economy, for our children individually–all families, everybody can benefit from it.”

O’Neal encouraged anyone who could to help with the Mentor’s Project.

January is National Mentoring Month, and the mentor’s project will be doing lots of events.
