The Mentor’s Project feeds hundreds of Macon’s homeless for Christmas
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Mentor’s Project in Macon was in the holiday spirit on Wednesday. The organization threw its 21st Annual Christmas Party for homeless members of the community.
It’s the most wonderful time of year to learn a lesson on giving.
“In this season of giving what better to offer than a hot meal to someone you don’t know?” said June O’Neal with the Mentor’s Project.
That’s what she wanted kids to take from Wednesday’s Christmas Party for the homeless.
“We want the children to realize that the gift is what’s in your heart and not in your hand,” O’neal said.
For volunteers, serving hundreds of Macon’s homeless was in their hearts, and in their hands–street survival gift bags.
“Every year I come out and help and I enjoy helping them,” said volunteer Lillie Fair. “Downstairs there’s coats, presents, blankets, clothes,” her granddaughter Knya added.
Not to mention a delicious holiday dinner. “We had a traditional holiday meal with turkey, dressing, green beans, and ham,” said O’neal.
Mentor’s Project participant Knya Clark and her grandmother Lillie Fair were two of the volunteers serving meals.
“I’ve been volunteering for about six or seven years now,” said Fair.
Clark took a lesson from her grandmother to help others where she could.
“If you have it and you’re willing to give it, I think you should give it to those who don’t have it,” she said.
Catering and donation items like coats, clothes and blankets came from local churches.
