Members of PETA Dress as Contraceptives to Bring Awareness to Pet Overpopulation

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Representatives of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, were in Macon to help bring awareness to pet overpopulation.

Dressed as colorful mascots in the shape of large condoms, the members of PETA handed out informational flyers urging citizens to spay and neuter their pets to control unwanted births.

Katie Arth, PETA’s campaigns manager, says using the unorthodox mascot is a good way to bring as much attention to the cause as possible.

“PETA has been taking our giant condoms around the country for the last few years,” Arth said, “They’re an upbeat way to get attention for a very serious issue.”

Arth went on to say that roughly 4-6 million dogs and cats are placed into animal shelters across the country each year, and upwards of 10,000 of them are euthanized on a daily basis.

The city of Macon recently adopted new spay and neuter laws.
