MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – District 9 of Macon-Bibb County has a new Commissioner. Her name is Brendalyn Bailey.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve,” said Bailey, who gathered with a group of community members on Monday to discuss her plans for the district.

Bailey is no stranger to the district, having lived there her entire life. She met with the community members at the Greater Bellavue Baptist Church. A place Bailey and her family have called their church home for decades.

Right down the street from the church, sits her grandmothers house, which Bailey says is the first home to be built in the district. The street the home is nestled in, is named after her grandfather. Bailey lives on that same street.

With the immediate resignation of former Commissioner, Al Tillman, the Board of Commissioners had to appoint someone to fill his seat or there would’ve been a special election.

Even with Bailey’s long history and deep roots in the community, her new appointment to fill Tillman’s former seat was met with some concern from other Commissioners. Concerns were raised over whether or not Bailey’s appointment was fair, citing how Bailey made an unsuccessful run in 2020 for the seat she holds now.

“The bigger picture is I’m here to help my community,” said Bailey.

When asked about those who did not vote for her, she said there is no animosity and looks forward to working with everyone.

“I don’t plan on getting to work later. I plan on getting to work now,” she said.

Bailey says her focus is on education, crime prevention, and encouraging young people to take pride in who they are.

Her first upcoming Commission meeting is on Tuesday, which could set the tone for how the rest of this year looks for her. She’ll hold the seat until December 31.

Bailey says she then plans to launch a reelection campaign to keep the seat.
