Mayor, Sheriff positions contested for Macon-Bibb May election

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb’s current mayor and the Bibb County sheriff will have opposition this May election.

Former Bibb County Commissioner Lonzy Edwards qualified for the election Tuesday.

“I keep hearing rumblings from city hall, that we need to keep our progress. We need to maintain our momentum, but that’s a difficult sell for people who live in East Macon, the people who live in Unionville, who live in other parts of this community that are actually distressed,” said Edwards.

Mayor Robert Reichert qualified Monday.

A former Bibb County Sheriff’s deputy is running against incumbent Sheriff David Davis. Tim Rivers qualified for the race Tuesday. Rivers also served as a former Macon Police officer. Mike Smallwood has also announced his intentions to run for the position.

Lester Miller is seeking re-election to his District 4 seat on the Bibb County School Board.

“I look forward to continuing another four years. For the Board of Education to continue all the great things that we’ve done the last two or three years, in particular, having a good relationship with our new superintendent, Dr. Curtis Jones. Looking forward to all the wonderful ESPLOST projects that we’re going to be doing,” said Miller.

Sundra Woodford qualified for the school board’s District 5 seat.

Probate Court Judge Sarah Harris is running for her position again.

“What I’m most proud of is that we have started a real emphasis on our mental health. We do a lot of involuntary commitments. We call them orders to apprehend, but it’s where we have someone picked up to be taken for an evaluation,” explained Harris.
