Macon’s mayor declares this weekend to be Otis Redding’s

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Mayor Robert Reichert announced with a formal proclamation that this upcoming weekend will be dedicated to celebrating the life and music of Otis Redding.

Reichert handed the proclamation to Redding’s daughter outside of Tubman Museum on Friday. Today would be the King of Soul’s 75th birthday.

The Otis Redding Foundation organized events in Macon over the next few days. Today’s formal proclamation was headlined by Central High School’s Sugar Bear Marching Band.

“He would’ve loved it because he was all about kids and education number one,” Justin Andrews, Redding’s grandson said. “And he was always about home so right here in his hometown in Macon, Georgia he would’ve been right here.”

Andrews said his grandfather would be happy to know his hometown is celebrating him.

“He probably would’ve been the one in the front of the marching band.”

Saturday, an Otis Redding Photography Exhibit will be held at the Tubman Museum from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A film about Redding’s life will be shown at the Douglass Theatre at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

On Sunday a musical tribute concert will be held at the Macon City Auditorium at 7 p.m.
