Matunda Ya Kwanzaa kicks off in Macon
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Today is the first day of Kwanzaa and many residents here in Macon are kicking off the first day at the Douglass Theatre.
“It’s about continuity in the community and teaching our children about education in the importance of reading. It’s more about the wholeness and learning about your history,” says Resident Marie Williams.
Kwanzaa Performer Karim Muhammad explains why this holiday is significant and important to him.
“One thing about Kwanzaa, it’s about uniting the community and especially for black people here in Macon and to learn about their roots and about their culture,” says Muhammad.Living the seven principles is what Emory Calhoun says its vital to Kwanzaa.
“I’m a person who tries to live the seven principles on a daily basis not just at one time throughout the year,” says Emory.
More Kwanzaa events in Macon will be going on until the first of January with more local youth performing and honoring their culture foundation.
