Mass protests in Israel call for ceasefire with Hamas and return of hostages

(CNN)-  More than a million Israelis took to the streets over the weekend, demanding their government reach a ceasefire deal with Hamas and secure the release of the remaining hostages.

Organizers said the demonstrations spanned multiple cities and included a nationwide strike, culminating in a massive rally at Tel Aviv’s Hostage Square. Among those voicing support was Israeli actress Gal Gadot.

Protesters are urging the government to halt its planned takeover of Gaza City, arguing the war has already devastated Hamas and continuing the fight is pointless. Analysts, including Aaron David Miller of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said public pressure could prove critical in shifting the government’s stance.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the demands, warning that the protests would only embolden Hamas. “They also ensure that the horrors of October 7 will be repeated and that we will be forced to fight an endless war,” Netanyahu said.

Critics accuse the government of prolonging the conflict to strengthen its grip on power. Israeli President Isaac Herzog backed Netanyahu’s position but acknowledged the pain of families still waiting for loved ones. “We want the hostages back home,” Herzog said.

Officials believe around 20 of the remaining hostages are still alive.
