MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — After more than 40 years of serving the Milledgeville community, the Mary Vinson Memorial Library has reopened following a major renovation aimed at meeting modern needs.

Several Milledgeville residents, along with local and state officials, gathered Tuesday to celebrate the library’s renovations.

After months of reconstruction and planning, the community now has its library back, complete with expanded resources. Middle Georgia Regional Library Director Jennifer Lautzenheiser says the project represents a significant step forward for Milledgeville.

“The staff and community were so patient in the temporary location across the parking lot,” she said. “But it was just not as big, beautiful, and functional as this facility. So, to have this building open with the expanded services now available in this building, we’re just very excited and think it will serve the community well.”

Lautzenheiser explained the older building was about 40 years old and did not meet the modern needs of the community, including space for meetings, tutoring, expanded technology access and teen services. She says the renovated facility now offers all of those resources.

“Being able to renovate the facility and better meet those unique needs, we think it was very important for the community,” she said.

Lautzenheiser says the updated building and services will have a positive impact on Milledgeville residents.

“To support the adult literacy initiative, whether it’s print or technology, we really think this new design will better meet those needs,” she said.

The library is located at 151 S Jefferson Street SE.

Lautzenheiser added the library system is now working on renovations for the Collins P. Lee Library in Baldwin County’s Harrisburg community.
