MARSHALVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- The Salvation Army assisted residents in Marshallville after an EF2 tornado caused significant damage early Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, the tornado touched down near Marshallville at approximately 6:41 a.m., with winds estimated between 110 and 115 miles per hour. The storm carved a path nearly five miles long and about 600 yards wide through parts of Macon County.

The Salvation Army responded after officials said the tornado destroyed four manufactured homes, overturned another, and ripped the tops from two silos. Numerous trees were also snapped and uprooted. Two people were injured.

As recovery efforts began, displaced residents sought shelter in Marshallville, where the American Red Cross established a temporary shelter.

Volunteers provide meals for displaced residents

In response to a request for support, Captains Tim and Paula Blevins of The Salvation Army corps based in Macon mobilized resources to assist those impacted.

On Saturday and Sunday, March 14–15, Salvation Army volunteers prepared and served hot breakfasts for residents staying at the shelter.

“For us, it is always an honor to serve during moments like this,” said Captain Tim Blevins. “Providing a warm meal and a caring presence is one small way we can remind our neighbors in Marshallville that they are not alone.”

Recovery efforts continue

The Salvation Army said it will continue supporting residents as cleanup and recovery efforts move forward in Macon County.

Officials said the focus remains on providing meals and assistance to those affected as the community begins the recovery process.
