Macon’s MLK jr. Commission to honor sanitation workers
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commission is honoring some of the county’s employees.
A breakfast is scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2016 to recognize sanitation workers and others in the solid waste, public works, and parks and beautification departments.
Solid Waste Director Kevin Barkley says he and his staff appreciate the recognition, but that isn’t why they do the job.
“It takes a very unique person to do this job, so our employees are those types of people. They’re not out there for the recognition and everything. It’s good steady work and it’s something they enjoy,” Barkley said.
Commissioner Elaine Lucas says it’s important to honor and give thanks to those individuals who provide a public service when you can, especially if they have a dangerous job.
“We want to spotlight the fact that these folks do dangerous work and that they need to be honored, recognized and because it’s National Public Works Week this is just a wonderful time to do it,” she said.
