Macon’s Former Top Cop Honored as ‘Outstanding Chief of the Year’
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon’s former top cop is the state’s Chief of the Year.
The Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police named Chief Mike Burns as the 2013 Outstanding Chief of the Year. He received the award during the organization’s summer conference in Savannah on Tuesday.
Burns was selected based on his 39 years of service as well for his proactive contributions to MPD, GACP, and the law enforcement community. MPD says he was also selected based on the significant reduction of reported crime in Macon for 2012.

The GACP acknowledged one of Burns’ many accomplishments was that he earned national law enforcement accreditation which was initially awarded to MPD in March 2007 by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The department continues to be an accredited agency.
Burns was also awarded lifetime membership in the GACP. Current MPD Mike Carswell released the following statement, “On behalf of the entire MPD family, I congratulate Chief Burns on his hard-earned and well-deserved award.”
Burns retired last month.
