Macon woman arrested after baby found in trash bag, infant in critical condition

The Macon-Bibb Emergency 911 Center received a call at 1:08 p.m. on March 31.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A woman was arrested, and a baby is in critical but stable condition after being found in a trash bag hours after birth, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

The Macon-Bibb Emergency 911 Center received a call at 1:08 p.m. on March 31. Deputies responded to the Piedmont Macon Emergency Room on Coliseum Drive after a woman arrived for care due to excessive bleeding.

22-year-old Alaynah Marie Rappuhn was brought to the hospital by her boyfriend after he noticed her condition at home.

Before leaving their residence in the 1300 block of Payton Street, Rappuhn placed a trash bag on the back porch. The sheriff’s office says that after transporting Rappuhn to the hospital, her boyfriend returned home to gather some belongings when he heard a noise coming from the bag.

The boyfriend found the infant wrapped in towels and the baby was immediately transported to the hospital. Rappuhn had given birth to the child after 4:30 a.m. that morning, then wrapped the baby in towels and placed him inside the trash bag. Hours later, when leaving for the hospital, she left the bag on the porch.

Rappuhn did not inform her boyfriend that she was pregnant or had given birth, and she also did not notify medical staff upon arriving for treatment.

On April 1 at 5:48 p.m., investigators arrested Rappuhn after her release from the hospital. Rappuhn faces charges of criminal attempt to commit felony murder, reckless abandonment of a child, and first-degree cruelty to children. Her bond has been denied.

Medical staff report the male infant is in critical but stable condition.
