Macon Wins Award for Improving Alleyways

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Downtown Macon has a lot of alleyways and they are actually the reason the city won an award for best design improvement.

The Georgia Downtown Association honored Main Street Macon for its Alleyway Project. The city installed new lights, re-surfaced the roads and created new patio spaces for downtown businesses and pedestrians to enjoy.

Main Street Macon says improving the walkways and alleyways is part of making downtown more attractive and secure.

“It really is a part of economic development to have attractive walkways and pedestrian alleyways so people feel comfortable, they feel safe,” Mechel McKinley with Main Street Macon said.

The Alleyway Project has been an ongoing effort for several years. Main Street Macon is excited to win the award and be recognized by the state, especially since the program has only been around for one year.
