Macon Wellness Center Receives Grant to Expand Program

MACON, Georgia (41 NBC/WMGT) – When people are diagnosed with cancer, they and their families do anything they can to get the mind off of the stress and worry it causes.

41 NBC spoke with a few people at the Wellness Center in Macon about the program they have in place that does just that and their recent good news.

The Cancer WellFit Program at the center is a 12-week session where participants exercise, learn, and even pain all in efforts to make their fight against cancer that much easier.

On Monday, the Central Georgia Health System announced that the program received a $15,000 grant from the Livestrong Foundation community impact project.

Sanda Stone and Mary Parks play active roles in the program. Stone is the coordinator of the Cancer Well Fit Project and parks, the artist in resident. It’s Park’s job to teach participants how to paint and how keep them motivated.

Parks says “Most of em are so amazed, especially when we’ve finished a project and take it around the unit and show them the student gets to hear the ooo’s and the ahhhh’s.”

The grant will allow the wellness center to implement the program at the center for the community.

Stone told 41 NBC the grant money they received from the Livestrong Foundation will provide support for the community and allow men, women, and children to be a part of the program as well. She says the goal is to get the program up and running by late Spring.
