Macon teens injured while taking the “Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge”
The youngest Kardashian sister is well-known for her plump pout and people everywhere are trying to copy her.
“We kind of just did it for fun. We didn’t think it was going to turn into anything,” 13-year-old Chloe Kahley said.
Chloe and her 14-year-old sister Ellie of Macon took the “Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge.” It’s a way for you to mimic the starlet’s lips without cosmetic surgery. The results weren’t exactly what the girls expected.
“I didn’t really get big lips, but some bruising,” recalled Chloe.
The teens said people use shot glasses, medicine cups, and water bottles to take the challenge. You put your lips into one of the containers and then suck in air for an extended period of time. This causes the tissues in your lips to swell.
“There’s not a way to control how much swelling you’re going to get in your lips,” said Dr. Jamie Davis, the Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Medical Center, Navicent Health.
Dr. Davis explained the trend could cause severe damage to your mouth.
“If it’s done too long or with too much pressure, it can cause those blood vessels to break,” explained Dr. Davis.
But how long is too long?
“Some people do it for like 15 minutes, but I only did it for like 30 seconds,” recalled Chloe.
Chloe’s lips were bruised for about five days, but her sister’s friend is still using makeup to cover her injuries.
“She bruised really bad. Like, a week. Her bruising has still been going on. Hers is actually really bad,” said Ellie Kahley.
Ellie thinks her friend received a more serious injury because she used a shot glass instead of a plastic cup. Both the teens and Dr. Davis would not recommend this “challenge” to anyone.
“These girls have so much more to offer to the world than big lips. What are you accomplishing with that?” asked Dr. Davis.
Dr. Davis said there isn’t an exact treatment for the injury. She recommends using ice and ibuprofen until the swelling goes down, which could take a couple of days.
