Macon Students Walk to Stamp Out Cancer

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Teachers and students laced up outside the classroom Friday to stamp out cancer.

Classes at Alexander II Elementary School in downtown Macon have been raising money for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and Friday afternoon, students walked around nearby Tattnall Square Park as part of their mission to help walk all over the disease.

The class that raised the most money, got to crown its teacher the Relay for Life Queen. That honor went to 3rd grade teacher Ernestine Mcrae, who says the battle against cancer impacts her on a very personal level.

“When I met my husband years ago, his mom was very sick with cancer, and it means so much to me to be able to help and give back to the organization,” she said.

Organizer Jennifer McMahan, who is a teacher at Alexander II, said it’s important to get the kids involved.

“Almost every child has had someone affected by cancer that they know so we want to do our part to help end cancer,” McMahan said.

Mcrae’s class raised $303, and the school as a whole raised more than $4,000 to help Relay for Life.
