MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Bibb County student at Alexander II Magnet School received a surprise visit Monday by Georgia Superintendent Richard Woods in recognition of his impressive reading achievement. Eldon Roberson recently exceeded the 5 million words read mark in his Accelerated Reading Program, becoming the only student in his school to do so.
Roberson, an avid reader, faced a unique challenge when he began running out of books to read at his school’s library.
“I started running out of books from the library, so I had to go to the public library, and luckily,” Roberson paused, looking toward his mom and then patting her on the shoulder, breaking out into laughter. “Yea, so she can drive me to the public library.”
Despite his enthusiasm for reading, Roberson admitted nonfiction was the most difficult genre for him.
The surprise visit from Superintendent Woods was the fulfillment of a promise he made to Roberson during a previous visit if the student could manage to read 4 million words.
