Macon Residents Say Second Street Needs Clean Up

According to some Macon residents, Second Street could use some sprucing up.

Shameika Boatman and her mother Julia both have had it with the row of run-down houses, 3-foot tall weeds, and piles of garbage.

“Once upon a time we had everybody staying in every house, I had friends, we had the store over there…it was just an all around all right neighborhood,” says Shameika.

Sadly, that’s not the story anymore.

“I have a lot of good memories (here), but right now it’s just a disappointment,” says Julia.

Julia Boatman has lived on Second Street since 1973. She says her house is more than a home, but it doesn’t always feel that way.

“People walk the streets all times of the night, doing a little bit of everything,” says Julia.

Neighbors have mutual feelings.

Sophie Jackson says, “It embarrasses me because it looks terrible, it really does look terrible.”

The residents on Second Street say they won’t give up on their community, they just hope someone will care enough to help.

“This is my neighborhood and I love this neighborhood…I pay my taxes and I want them to do something about this,” says Julia.

Macon City Councilman Tom Ellington says the Macon-Bibb County Land Bank Authority has already approved moving several of the house titles over to “Rebuilding Macon” to begin the revitalization process and get the neighborhood cleaned up.
