Macon residents celebrate National Kazoo Day

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It’s no guitar or drum set, but this little instrument packs a lot of history.

“It’s from Macon, Georgia. Alabama Vest created it along with a clock maker,” Donna Kurtz, the Activities Director for the Cottages on Wesleyan, said.

The idea for the Kazoo sparked more than 200 years ago. Kurtz says it first premiered at the Georgia State Fair in 1852.

Kazoo lovers tried to put Macon on the map in 2007.

“Macon tried to pull together the largest number of kazoo players and we failed,” said Kurtz. However, Kurtz isn’t giving up hope.

“I’m going to look and see if we’ve ever had this many octogenarians playing the kazoo at one time,” said Kurtz.

Kurtz’s kazoo chorus had a number of seasoned musicians, all over the age of 80. The oldest was 92.

Most of the people in Kurtz’ chorus had never played the kazoo before, but it didn’t take them long to become pro’s. They can’t wait to celebrate National Kazoo Day again next year. Officials are now looking at setting a record for having the most kazoo-ers over 80 years old.
