Macon Purrs N Paws Could Lose Lease Due to Smell

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – One of Macon’s largest animal rescue groups could lose its lease and end up on the streets.

Recently, neighbors near Macon Purrs N Paws have been complaining about an overpowering odor coming from the shelter. Director Anne Brennaman and her volunteers sweep, shampoo and scrub daily, but the smell is still there.

“We’ve tried everything we can think of,” Brennaman said.

After two years, of leasing out of the location on Rocky Creek Road, an odor has taken over the rescue group’s building. Macon Purrs N Paws Human Society is a state licensed rescue group that houses hundreds of cats and fosters even more dogs. If the organization doesn’t fix the problem soon, they will have to clean up and get out.

“We are in danger of losing our lease,” Brennaman said, “if we lose our lease, we have no where to go.”

This week, Brennaman made the costly decision to hire an consultant to examine the shelter.

“We don’t know how we’re going to pay for anything that has to be done,” Brennaman said, “but the only way we can stay is if we make it right.”

She estimates the work will cost her anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000. It’s a steep price to pay for an organization that runs solely on donations.

“My biggest fear is that the state will have to come in and take our cats and there’s the possibility that they will be euthanized,” she said.

Community members have already donated money and time to help with the smell, but Brennaman is still struggling to cover the consultant’s cost.
