Macon Police to Operate as Normal with Consolidation Approaching

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Macon Police Chief Mike Burns and unit commanders met Wednesday during their annual retreat to review upcoming budgets, crime activity from last year, and discuss items on the agenda needing improvement.

Chief Burns said he is happy with last year because the crime was the lowest it has ever been in the city.

With consolidation approaching the chief will no longer have a position but said, “We’re still the Macon Police Department, we’re going to operate like the Macon Police Department, we still have duties to the citizens that we have to do every single day, I have duties to my officers that I have to do as long as I’m here…but for now we’re running as normal.”

When asked about the recent incident involving Macon police officer Clayton Sutton and shooting death of Sammie Davis, Jr., Burns replied, “I’m asking the community to be patient with the GBI, not the Macon Police Department, once the results come back from the investigation, we’ll move on from there.”

The retreat is a chance for him and other officials to get away from the office. This year’s retreat was held at Mabel White Baptist Church on Bass Road in Macon.
