Macon Police Suggest Tips to Remain Safe Near Busy Roadway

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – After the second fatal pedestrian traffic accident on Gray highway, Macon police officers are concerned for pedestrians’ safety while crossing the busy road.

When cars race up and down Gray Highway, people crossing the street have to be aware.

Samuel Riley is the Lead Traffic Investigator for the Macon Police Department. He says most times pedestrians cross the street dangerously out of convenience.

“It’s more convenient for them to get there, the fastest way to a point is a straight line.”

Riley recommends wearing bright or reflective clothing especially at night, when drivers could have difficulty seeing what’s in front of them.

“There are certain areas that you will walk through that aren’t as luminated as others. As a car is going down the street, that’s what your headlights are there for is to light up what’s in front of you. So if you have something that’s reflective of something that’s bright, it’s going to be a lot easier for the eye to see, for something that’s very dark in a dark area,” Riley said.

Drivers also have to be aware as well. Riley says they need to pay attention and always have an escape route when you’re driving.

“You’ve got to pay attention to other drivers to. You can be the safest driver in the world, but somebody else is going to make a decision, that’s going to affect your driving ability and might cause a crash,” Riley said.
