Macon pediatrician shares back-to-school health tips for children

Dr. Christy Peterson, a pediatrician at Children’s Care in downtown Macon, said it is important for children to visit their pediatrician regularly for wellness checks and to stay up to date on vaccinations.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A Macon pediatrician is sharing tips to help families prepare children for the upcoming school year.

Dr. Christy Peterson, a pediatrician at Children’s Care in downtown Macon, said it is important for children to visit their pediatrician regularly for wellness checks and to stay up to date on vaccinations.

In addition to routine checkups and vaccines, Peterson said sleep is a key part of a child’s routine.

“It’s going to take a couple of weeks to get ready,” Peterson said. “If you haven’t started, go ahead and start.”

She noted that different age groups require different amounts of sleep. Teenagers need 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night, while younger children need 9 to 10 hours.

Peterson also encouraged parents to prioritize nutrition as the school year begins, recommending protein with every meal. She said eggs and nuts are simple and healthy options.
