Macon Named Finalist for Friendliest Town in America
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The city of Macon is one of the top five “Friendliest Towns” in America, that’s according to a Rand McNally “Best of the Road” contest.
Macon Mayor Robert Reichert says there’s only one way to spell the friendliest city.
“M-A-C-O-N…Macon,” he said.
Rand McNally is holding a contest to find the top friendliest town in America, and Macon recently made the top 5.
Residents in the community are casting their votes online to push for the top spot.
“We’re absolutely delighted with this development and we want to take the opportunity to urge and encourage everyone in Macon to continue to participate in this,” Reichert said.
To win in the friendliest category, the rules say the city has to be all about the people and how they are treated.
“The folks in these towns go the distance to take care of one another and to make visitors feel immediately at home,” Reichert said. “They are also dedicated to community service projects that ensure a better quality of life and celebrate civic pride and history.”
The city has recently asked community members to make a difference using social media, recently winning the Benjamin Moore Paint What Matters contest to revitalize Second Street.
Now Macon is asking its residents to make one final push to become America’s friendliest city.
They’re being asked to produce a video or photo tour and essay that persuade judges.
And they also can do it using social media.
“Posting pictures of interactions between people, laughing, talking, shaking hands, or welcoming new visitors, signs that say welcome to Macon,” Reichert said.
Officials say the goal is to make the city a travel destination as opposed to one where people just drive through.
To continue supporting and letting the country know about Macon, go online and use social media to show our friendliness.
