Macon Mayor, “Peace Keepers” Calling on Community and Law Enforcement to Stop Violence

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The city of Macon is calling on a national organization, and the Department of Justice to stop the violence and help bring peace to the streets.

“To interrupt it, to stop it, to find alternatives to shooting and killed and to just promote a sense of security and peace in every neighborhood,” said Macon Mayor Robert Reichert.

Four community forums will be held to give the public and law enforcement the chance to talk and work directly with each other. The meetings are being facilitated by the Department of Justice.

Macon police officers will be required to attend at least one of the four meeting days. They are schedule on Tuesday, April 30th and May 7th from 1 to 5pm at the Macon Centreplex. The other two meetings are set for Thursday, May 2nd and May 9th from 7 to 10pm.

Reichert says in the wake of three homicides in 10 days, it’s time for the community to help put an end to crime in the city.

“Black on black violence and youth violence it could be related to gang activity is a serious concern not just for the Mayor’s office not just for the police office but it’s a serious concern for our entire community,” said Reichert.

At a news conference this afternoon, Reichert also threw support behind founder of Peace Keepers, Captain Dennis Muhammad. He is in town to host a forum this Thursday night, April 25 from 6:30 to 8pm at Macon City Hall.

The conversation will also focus on law enforcement and the community.

“Law enforcement alone cannot solve the problem of crime in this community without the help and support of this community,” said Muhammad.
