Macon Mayor Gives Update on Second Street Transformation Project

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Connecting downtown to Mercer University is one of the city’s biggest projects, that’s what Macon Mayor Robert Reichert expressed during an update on the Second Street transformation.

At Monday’s Macon Rotary meeting, Reichert told members plans for the revitalization project are coming together. The city has the funding and is now selecting a design team and construction manager. You will start to see some action soon. Construction on the first phase will start in August on the block between Cherry and Poplar streets.

The mayor says this will give the community a sneak peak at what the new complete street will look like.

“That would show exactly how you can mix different modes of transportation, pedestrian, bicycle, and automobile, and hopefully one day a transit system as well, into a pattern that works well for everybody,” Reichert said.

Reichert says the second phase of the project, which connects the end of Second Street to Little Richard Penniman Boulevard, will hopefully start at the beginning of next year.
