GBI: Man shot, killed after attempting to attack Bibb deputy with screwdriver

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.

UPDATE (12:45pm): The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing a fatal officer-involved shooting after a man tried to attack a Bibb County deputy with a screwdriver at a convenience store early Thursday, according to a GBI news release.

GBI said deputies were dispatched at about 12:10 a.m. to the Circle K at 4775 Chambers Road after reports of a man acting erratically and harassing customers. When deputies arrived, the man, 28-year-old Zachary Ward of Macon, attempted to attack a deputy with a screwdriver. The deputy fired, and Ward was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured, according to the GBI.

The body will be taken to the Central Crime Lab in Macon for an autopsy. The GBI will conduct an independent investigation and, once complete, forward the case file to the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.


MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating a deputy-involved shooting that happened just after midnight Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies responded to the Circle K located at 4775 Chambers Road after reports that a man was forcing his way inside and attacking the store clerk and customers.

When the deputy arrived, the man charged at the deputy with a weapon. The deputy fired their weapon, striking the man. Deputies and paramedics attempted to provide medical aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Zachary Aaron Ward. According to the Coroner’s Office the next of kin has been notified.

No other injuries were reported.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Office will also conduct an internal review. Further updates will be released as information becomes available.
