Macon documentary premiering Saturday highlights organ donation in Black community
“The Perfect Gift” explores the impact of organ donation among African Americans, who make up more than 60% of Georgia’s transplant waitlist.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful’s Asha Ellen is presenting a new documentary titled “The Perfect Gift,” which will explore the impact of organ donation and transplantation within the African American community.
The film is based on real-life stories of African Americans whose lives were changed through organ donation.
Ellen says the project is especially important because it brings awareness to the disproportionate number of African Americans waiting for transplants.
“In the state of Georgia, there are about five thousand people waiting [on] life-saving transplants,” she said. “Out of that five thousand, over 60% are African American. However, when it comes to registering to be organ donors, because of fears, myths, and misconceptions we tend to not always register. So, the education and the empowerment is very important.”
“The Perfect Gift” documentary and accompanying exhibit will premiere Saturday, April 19 at the Douglass Theatre in Macon.
