Macon Disc Golfers Play For Better Cause

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Ice Bowl sounds like a pretty cold event.

But fortunately for some Macon disc golf players out at Claystone Park

Saturday afternoon’s weather was pretty nice.

It’s the sound every player wants to hear.

And battling the conditions is part of the fun.

It is, it’s been extremely windy, the lake’s been white capping,” said disc golfer Spencer Braley.

When the discs are flying for a good reason, it makes it all even better.

“It’s absolutely a great situation, I mean you know, 25 dollars plus five canned goods goes to the Macon Food Bank [sic],” said Braley. “Get to come out and play two great rounds of disc golf, we got fed today. The food was very good. It’s been a very good experience. This is actually my first tournament, so, very good experience for my first tournament.”

For Spencer Braley and more than 25 disc golf players Saturday afternoon, trying to make those chain shake was just part of it.

Macon-Bibb Parks and Recreation hosted a disc golf tournament as a part of the Ice Bowl–a series of tournaments supporting different causes.

Saturday, it was the Middle Georgia Food Bank.

And when the weather’s that good outside, it’s pretty easy to throw a disc for a good cause.

“Participants they register with us and they also have to bring canned goods, so anything that we raise from the canned goods goes to the food bank,” said Ellen Banas.

Ellen Banas helped organize the event, keeping track of players scores.

“When we take it to the food bank, we’re gonna weigh it. I don’t know how much exactly, but each player was asked to bring at least 5 canned goods–some people brought a little bit more. So we’re hoping that we got somewhere around 100, 200 pounds of food,” said Banas.

Giving more than 100 pounds of food to those in need?

That’s the sound everyone wants to hear.

Banas also said it didn’t cost the taxpayers any money to hold the event.

That means all the money and food can go straight to the food bank.

Next month, a tournament will be held to support the special olympics.
