Macon Debates Using Sales Tax To Finish Museum

MACON, Ga. – City officials and voters in Macon are debating whether sales tax money should be used to complete the Tubman African American Museum, which has sat unfinished for six years.

Some city officials want to set aside $2.5 million to finish the project as part of a $190 million sales tax referendum on the ballot in November. The Telegraph reports that opponents say tax dollars shouldn’t be spent on a privately owned museum that ran out of money during construction.

Ed Watt, a retired Macon salesman, says money for the museum project would make him vote against the entire sales tax proposal.

City officials who want to use tax money to finish the museum say it’s a valuable economic development project for downtown.
