OGLETHORPE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon County Schools Superintendent is hosting a Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, September 17 to address current safety protocols and to take questions from community stakeholders.

The meeting is happening at 6 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in Marshallville.

Students returned to classes on Monday following an abrupt dismissal Friday morning as law enforcement responded to Macon County High School. The Town Hall is being held after bullet holes were discovered in the west entrance door of the building on Friday. The discovery happened before school started for the day, and the superintendent, Marc Maynor, says he decided to close all schools in the county “given the potential stress and concern for everyone involved.”

In a statement posted on the school district’s website, Maynor added, “I am deeply concerned about this event. The safety of our students, staff, and the entire school community is my top priority. In response to this incident, we are taking additional measures to further enhance the security of our campuses. This includes an increased police presence on and around school grounds. Furthermore, I will be meeting with our district’s Safety Team to explore additional ways to improve safety protocols across all buildings.”

The school district says parents of children who are anxious about what happened should reach out to school counselors for support.

On Monday, three arrests were made in connection with that incident.

Maynor said earlier the school district would pursue maximum legal charges for the person responsible for the school damage.

Officers from Macon County Campus Safety Police Department, Montezuma Police Department and Oglethorpe Police Department responded to investigate.
