Macon Considers ‘Homeless’ Meters
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A group in Macon is moving forward with it’s idea to install donation meters for the homeless.
Leadership Macon Class of 2012 hopes to install “donation stations” that would resemble parking meters. The money collected would be distributed to local shelters and groups through the Macon Coalition to End Homelessness.
“It will give a new face to new people and give and raise awareness for the organizations already going the work,” said Leadership Macon’s Jonathan Dye.
Leadership Macon’s Chris Tsavatewa says the plan was modeled after a very similar and successful project in Denver. He wants people to understand that this is not the solution to homeless just another outlet to give.
“For them to have an alternative giving opportunity to those organizations that are currently supporting and helping the homeless in our area,” Tsavatewa said.
Macon City Council members viewed the final proposal for the first time Tuesday. The council could vote on the plan within the next two weeks.
“Hopefully it will be back before council two weeks from tonight and move forward,” said Council Member Lauren Benedict.
If the project goes as planned, Dye hopes to have the meters installed as early as November.
