Macon Community Fridge supports families during winter break
The Macon Community Fridge is continuing its efforts to help families in need during the winter break.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon Community Fridge is continuing its efforts to help families in need during the winter break.
This Saturday, December 23 at 1 p.m., the Macon Community Fridge will be holding an event to serve hot meals and drinks to those in need. The community fridge partners with Steward Chapel AME and other community members to provide a place to turn when people are hungry and in need, providing meals, clothes and water.
Director Levornia Franklin, says when school is out, even more resources are needed.
“Schools are out means meals are cut short,” Franklin said. “So the community freezer now is going to possibly double to try to keep food in both refrigerators in Macon.”
If you would like to donate, you can drop off individually wrapped or pre-packaged food and pantry goods 24/7 any day of the week. You can even drop off food to be cooked.
Hannah Mattews, the co-founder of the Macon Community Fridge, says the fridge offers people in the community a different kind of experience.
“Anybody can come by the fridge whenever they need it,” she said. “And that’s kind of the idea of the community fridge. There are no restrictions. There are no limitations on how much they can take, really giving them their dignity back, making it more like a grocery shopping experience versus a food pantry or a food bank.”
However, there are a few guidelines to keep in mind. No expired food, raw meats, alcohol, or unlabeled leftovers will be accepted.
If you would like to donate, you can CashApp or Venmo at Macon Community Fridge.
