Macon Co. Tornado Kills Hundreds of Chickens, Destroys Business

A Macon County family is dealing with the devastating loss of their business. Henda Farm breeds chickens, and violent storms killed more than 1,000 of them. A tornado that touched down on Saturday destroyed the majority of the farm leaving the Overholt Family with no option other than to close their business.

“The insurance adjustor said they’re just going to take it down. It’s too much damage even to the one that’s standing,” says owner Henry Overholt.

The farm’s 20,000+ chickens will be moved to other breeding farms because the conditions the farm is in has left the area contaminated.

Agriculture Advisor to Representative Sanford Bishop was at the Henda Farm observing the damage. “I’ve seen many disasters and this is by far one of the worst agriculture disasters I’ve seen,” says James Crozier.

Overholt says he is sadden about the loss of his business, but is happy no one was seriously hurt.

The farm employees 3, and Overholt says he will do his best to find them other work.

Henda Farms has been operating for the last 22 years.
