Macon City Council Members Pass Tougher Dog Regulations

Monday night the Public Safety Committee of Macon City Council passed an amendment bringing stricter dog regulations.

An owner of a dog that inflicts severe injury to a human on public property, and is unprovoked, now has to take precautions. You must register the dog, insure the animal with a policy worth $15,000, and post warning signs on your property.

Councilman James Timley believes the regulation will be hard to enforce.

“Pay $100 a year plus $25 thereafter to have your dog registered as a potentially dangerous dog and have 15 thousand worth of liability and that’s for every potentially dangerous dog or dangerous dog in the city. I see where people will just let their dogs go,” said Timley.

According to council members, this action won’t affect responsible dog owners. It’s meant to cut down on stray and dangerous dogs in Macon. The amendment is now in compliance with current state regulations.
