Macon Church Rallies Around Young Cancer Fighter

MACON, Georgia – The community is rallying behind a young man faced with an incredibly tough task–beat cancer.

And he is one step closer after Saturday night.

“Actually, I have a verse that I say if I’m having a tough time. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” said Deven Jackson.

His father calls him a trooper.

“He’s been a wonderful, strong trooper,” said Garrick Jackson, Deven’s father.

And you need to be, when you’ve been diagnosed with a rare brain tumor.

“Sometimes I think myself, if it was me going through it, I probably couldn’t handle it as well as him,” said Garrick.

But nine-year-old Deven Jackson is doing it, and doing it, with the support of friends and family.

“To meet Deven, you would never know,” said event organizer Takeila Booze. “He is just a regular kid who goes about his day. He is full of life. Energetic. He has a great spirit. He’s just, he’s just a wonderful, wonderful person.”

Saturday night, hundreds gathered at the Beulahland Bible Church to honor Deven and sing praise to the One whom Deven holds such strong faith in.

“I think God put this, this disease on me–this disease in me for a reason,” said Deven.

And Deven plans to fight through it.

The future chemotherapy treatments will be tough, but Deven says nights like Saturday night really help.

“Some of the songs kind of shook me a little, because they were so loud when they started off. But the music–I liked the music, it was pretty, it was good,” sid Deven.

And most importantly, his parents–Garrick and Valeria–have been a strong rock to lean on.

“It means a lot, for them to…for them to be there,” said Deven.

Keep fighting Dev.

Devin had to wear a mask on his face during the service to ward off germs.

His immune system is very weak.

He will continue to be treated with chemotherapy in the future.
