Macon charter school says district owes it money
Whitt Gaither, the chairman of the board for the Academy of Classical Education, addressed the Bibb County Board of Education during Tuesday night’s public hearing on the proposed FY2016 budget. He tells 41NBC, the charter school got $6,233 for each student from the district, which adds up to almost $5 million.
Gaither says that estimated funding didn’t include money ACE was suppose to get for some students, including children with special needs or exceptional and gifted kids.
“We believe the guess was under and that we are due some true up. And the superintendent alluded that tonight,” Gaither said. “He spoke to me specifically and said let’s talk about that and figure it out. Honestly, he knows that the bottom line is the dollars have to follow the kid.”
Gaither says next year 1,127 students will be enrolled at ACE. He adds preliminary funding numbers for the 2015-2016 school year are also low, but he is working with the district to come up with a solution.
Gaither hopes the funding process can be resolved if the governor and state lawmakers simplify education funding.
