Macon Charter Academy principal, parents remain positive despite troubles

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Despite recent troubles, some Macon Charter Academy parents are hopeful their school will stay open next year.

41NBC’s Alexa Rodriguez found out what is fueling the positivity among the school’s new principal and a few ‘cheerleader’ parents.

“MCA pride baby! All day,” shouted Dawn Singletary while standing on the curb of the street for MCA’s morning drop off.

She’s been head cheerleader the last two mornings as students walk into the building for classes.

“My voice is gone, but my excitement is still here,” said Singletary.

Thursday morning she was joined by five others people. The group chanted “good morning scholars. Thank you parents.”

“The children are headed in the right direction. The school is headed in the right direction. I see parents motivated and excited again about MCA,” said Singletary.

The group is staying positive, even after the attorney for the school’s governing board sent a news release Tuesday saying the school has declared bankruptcy and has “no active plans or preparations to operate the school for the 2016-2017 school year.”

“We all hit bumpy roads. Macon Charter Academy is no different than any other school. The same issues that we face here are being faced in every school across America,” said MCA’s new principal Dr. Georgia Gary.

Dr. Gary has only been the school’s principal for about 10 days, but she said she’s impressed with the support she’s received from parents.

“Seeing what has happened in the last few weeks with our students, and our parents, and the rallying to keep MCA open, I feel very positive that we are going to move forward and we’re going to be successful at what we’re doing here,” added Dr. Gary.

Dr. Gary and the morning cheerleader parents plan to keep fighting for their top priority: the education of their children.

“These teachers, principals and whoever is involved in this, work hard to make this thing possible. We’re going to pray and make it possible that everything is going to be alright and it’s going to be good next year and the years to come,” said MCA Parent Dea Hughes.

41NBC reached out to the governing board’s attorney. He reinforced the statements previously made in Tuesday’s news release.
