Macon Charter Academy confident it will complete corrective action plan

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon Charter Academy officials said they are on the right track to finishing the school’s corrective action plan.

At a board meeting Tuesday night, the school’s principal gave an update on their progress. The Georgia Department of Education placed the school on probation in September

The principal said the bathrooms are cleaned and staff members check them three times a day. Security cameras are up and running around the campus and school leaders are working on finishing the security gate. In the meantime, there is a guard that watches the gate during school hours.

The principal explained the school was cited for not having a discipline plan, but the school does have one. Leaders are now working to improve and refine the code of conduct. They want to make it more transparent for parents by sending home notices instead of just electronic communication.

Parents who attended the meeting said they were pleased with Macon Charter Academy’s progress and still believe in the school and its leaders. However, they want to make sure their students get everything they were originally promised.

“It’s a lot to take. My grand babies love going here. They promised us foreign language here, extended hours and after school programs. They’ve cut all that out and I want it to come back,” said Carloni Smith.

MCA board members said they’ve been approved to start working with a charter association to help the school with its corrective action plan.
